Halloween Fun!

We dressed as Scooby Doo and the Gang (Mystery, Inc.) for several parties in October. Each time there were a few changes...First party Steven couldn't make, so Zach stepped in as Fred. (Sorry, I didn't get a pict with my own camera.)

...Second party Andrew wore a goatee, but by the next party he protested the itchy little bothersome fur, so after much coaxing I drew a goatee on his chin. We won 3rd place in the costume contest. Zach was the scary skeleton, part of a mystery we were solving.


...By Halloween day, Andrew absolutely refused to be Shaggy anymore (can you blame him, when it's not such a fun costume for a 9-yr-old?), so we bribed Zachary to take his place - McDonald's, anyone?

Little Fred! Zach actually loved dressing as Fred and even wanted to dress as him again today! I let him wear the shirts, but told him the yellow ascot would stay in the costume box.

I tried to encourage all the kids to use those push-in parts like Xander's (so easy!), but kids love a carved pumpkin - even if it means Mom (or Dad) does most of the work! At least Andrew was able to carve most of his, and I did Ellie's just to hurry things along as it was getting late on a school night. I placed candles in them on Halloween, but the darn Wyoming wind just wouldn't let them be! Battery-operated candles next year for sure!

Ellie grabbed a quick costume for an October B-day party she was invited to. It's actually her "Super Elizabeth" suit that Andrew helped me design a few years ago.

Alexander's Very First Hair Cut

Time to trim those curly baby locks! Xander was not excited about getting his hair cut, but he was definitely happy when it was all done! We love his new look! (And it's so easy to take care of!)

Trip to Pilot Butte one Sunday

The long, bumpy road to Pilot Butte.

We drove as far as our 4X4 would take us, then hiked.

View from the top of the ladder. Crazy thing is, what you see is the top of a mountain we had to drive up. It's quite flat and hard to believe you're really up so high. We saw several wild horses and rabbits.

Here's info I found at Wikipedia.org: "Pilot Butte is located directly on top of White Mountain, and was named by early travelers in the region as a signal that they were close to the Green River. Pilot Butte is also a part of the tour, and several herds of wild horses have been spotted in the area. The butte is the second highest point in the immediate region, the first being Aspen Mountain to the south. It is 7,949 feet (2,423 m) in elevation at its highest point. The butte can be hiked, and contains a steel ladder to assist in reaching the summit."

A while back we also drove up to Aspen Mountain - you can actually drive the entire road to the top (8,655 ft) via Radar Tower Road.

School is in session!

Ellie was very hesitant to play at first, but looks forward to practice with one of her best pals, Kenya.

Vacation in Yellowstone - Mid-August

Steven and I hadn't been to Yellowstone for 12 years, and thought it would be so neat for our kids to see. My parents happily joined us (and provided a trailer). We hadn't known beforehand that President Obama was going to be visiting during the same weekend. We caught the Old Faithful eruption after he and his family watched it. This was also our first family camping trip since Andrew was a baby. Alexander woke and cried for an hour the first night in the trailer, but thank goodness the next two nights went ok.

August Birthdays

This year, with so much going on, we had parties quite late for the kids - in September, to be exact. What was first thought to be a small gathering turned out pretty big. There are just so many kids in the neighborhood and at church who are the same ages as Andrew and Ellie (unlike St. Louis). Plus, I had the parties back-to-back. Andrew's first, then lunch with all party guests, then Ellie's party.

Andrew chose a Marvel Superhero theme and wanted cheesecake this time (my personal favorite). So I made a chocolate-marbled (marvel) cheesecake. Unfortunately, about half the boys don't care for cheesecake. They were pretty excited about the pizza, though. Every time the doorbell rang, most of them charged toward the door, nearly scaring off the visitor, as they yelled, "PIZZA!" Superhero Bingo was also a big hit, though Xander kept stealing the prize candy.

Elizabeth just loves dogs, so she got a pink dog cake. The girls enjoyed making cute buttons to wear, and dressed up with plenty of jewelry during the Princess game.

Getting our Yard Done - A Slow Process!

First thing was the cement driveway and walkways; then a fence; then grading and a drain pipe; then weeding and planning the front; planning the garden area...one of these days we'll have grass! But at least the kids have a fun playset and plenty of dirt!

Time for a haircut!

For several months, Steven let his hair just grow and grow. When he'd finally had more bad hair days than good, he asked Sara to cut it off.

We could have made a wig with all this hair!!!

Summer Activities

The kids had several great experiences this summer: They all joined in super fun Croft Cousin Camp (separated by older/younger/boys/girls this year). They all participated in gymnastics classes. Andrew took a digital photography class; Ellie joined in a Princess Camp; and Zach had a "Pirate Camp" set up by Mom, complete with a treasure hunt.

One of the things learned at Princess Camp was, of course, how to act like a princess.

Pioneer Trek - June

Steven was asked to be the medical person available for IV's, etc. on the trek. He took Andrew and Elizabeth along. They spent 3 days walking with handcarts from 4-6 miles each day along parts of the Mormon and Oregon trails. They also visited Martin's Cove. Andrew and Elizabeth walked some of the time, but seemed to end up in the handcart a lot. At least they weren't stranded in the snow without food to die and be eaten by wolves, which was the fate of some pioneers at Martin's Cove. In fact, nobody in their group required IV hydration, and there were only a few minor injuries.
